UPA gets a jolt, TMC withdraws support to Govt

Kolkata, Sept 19:  Trinamool Congress, the second biggest constituent of the UPA, today dealt a major blow to the Manmohan Singh government when it decided to withdraw its support on the issue of petroleum price hike, FDI in retail and corruption.

"We are withdrawing our support. Our ministers will go to Delhi, meet the Prime Minister and tender their resignations at 3 PM on Friday," TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced after a meeting of party MPs, top leaders and office bearers.

However, Banerjee added a caveat saying if the Centre rolls back the decision on FDI in multi-brand retail, raises the cap on supply of subsidised LPG to 12 cylinders and reduces diesel price hike from Rs.5 to Rs.3 or Rs.4, then the party would reconsider the decision to withdraw support.

She said the Central government was not a one-party rule.  "The government depends on the support of others. But in Bengal, we have a majority of our own and we are not dependant on others," she said.

Banerjee ruled out supporting the government from outside saying her decision was "not half-hearted".

Widening the attack on Congress, she brought in issues like coal block allocation scam, black money and fertiliser price rise.

"The FDI decision was taken to suppress the coalgate issue," the West Bengal Chief Minister said.

Accusing the Congress of indulging in "blackmail politics", she said whenever it has trouble with any of its allies, it goes to the other.

"When it has problem with Mayawati, it goes to Mulayam. When it has problems with Mulayam, it goes to Nitish (Kumar of JD-U) and it is like that," Banerjee said.

Referring to the FDI decision, she said there are 50 million people in unorganised retail sector. "Where will these people go? There will be disaster. It has not been sustainable even in the West."

While accusing Congress of indulging in "blackmail" politics, the Trinamool chief said, "somebody has to bell the cat."

She revealed that she had conveyed her opposition to FDI decisions directly to Congress President Sonia Gandhi but it did not work.

Banerjee also criticized Finance Minister P Chidambaram's statement yesterday ruling out rollback on FDI.

She said after all these steps, the Congress would now allow even Pension Bill and vowed to oppose it tooth and nail in Parliament.

"If we don't take a decision, they will even allow foreign players in pension sector. We can't tolerate," she said.

"We will not tolerate any anti-people decisions and we will oppose everything," she said.

She said her party would not be responsible if the country was forced to go for a mid-term poll.

"This government can stay for three months or six months, I don't know. They have lost the credibility. And if they cannot maintain friendship with us, then they cannot maintain friendship with anybody," Banerjee said.

She also raked up the blackmoney issue, questioning why the government has not taken steps to bring it back. Meanwhile,  CPI today asked the government to prove its majority after Trinamool Congress announced its decision to pull out of the government and withdraw support to it.

"Since 19 members have moved away from the government, according to all principles of parliamentary democracy, government should prove its majority on the floor of the House," CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta told PTI.PTI

Insufficient practical apparatus

Dear Editor,

I, as a B.Sc. student of Jawaharlal Nehru College, Pasighat came to know that Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh is going to start Science department in Tezu college. It is a good news for the state to have another science department, but my question is,  will the state governtment able to provide required materials for the department?

In fact the existing Science departments in two colleges, namely J N College, Pasighat, and DNGC, Itanagar are running without adequate  infrastructure and resources. We, the students are unable to perform practical up to the extent due to the lack of chemicals and equipments. Practical classes are part of our syllabus and we are unable to learn all those practical things. As a result, when we do join in other universities for higher studies, students suffer a lot. In JN College Pasighat we have only two lecturers in the department of Chemistry and Physics. It makes teaching-learning process painful for both lecturers and students.

Therefore, the state government must take initiatives for better educational system in the state.  The state can be changed through ideal education.

Yours,

Achievements under MDG

The summary report of the the Millennium development Goals 2012 revealed that for the first time since poverty trends began to be monitored, the number of people living in extreme poverty and poverty rates fell in every developing region including in sub-Saharan Africa, where rates are highest.

Preliminary estimates indicate that the global poverty rate at $1.25 a day fell in 2010 to less than half the 1990 rate. If these results are confirmed, the first target of the MDGs, cutting the extreme poverty rate to half its 1990 level, will have been achieved at the global level well ahead of 2015.

On the other hand the world has met the target of halving the proportion of people without access to improved sources of water . The target of halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water was also met by 2010.

There was significant improvement in the lives of 200 million slum dwellers. The share of urban residents in the developing world living  in slums declined from 39 per cent in 2000 to 33 per cent in 2012. More than 200 million gained access to either improved water sources, improved sanitation facilities, or durable or less crowded housing. This achievement exceeds the target of significantly improving the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers, well ahead of the 2020 deadline.

In education sector, enrolment rates of children of primary school age increased markedly in sub-Saharan Africa, from 58 to 76 per cent between 1999 and 2010. Many countries in that region succeeded in reducing their relatively high out-of-school rates even as their primary school age populations were growing.

Despite population growth, the number of under-five deaths worldwide fell from more than 12.0 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 2010. And progress in the developing world as a whole has accelerated. Sub-Saharan Africa—the region with the highest level of under-five mortality—has doubled its average rate of reduction, from 1.2 per cent a year over 1990-2000 to 2.4 per cent during 2000-2010.

Ganesh Chaturthi -A Festival to Imbibe Perfect Leadership (Gananayak) Within

Dr. Jayadeba Sahoo

Lord Shree Ganesh is god of Wisdom and the remover of obstacles.Lord Ganesha is worshipped, or at least remembered, in the beginning of any auspicious performance for blessings and auspiciousness. He has four hands, elephant’s head and a big belly. His vehicle is a tiny mouse. In his hands he carries a rope (to carry devotees to the truth), an axe (to cut devotees’ attachments), and a sweet dessert ball “Laddoo” (to reward devotees for spiritual activity). His fourth hand’s palm is always extended to bless people. A unique combination of his elephant like head and a quick moving tiny mouse vehicle represents tremendous wisdom, intelligence, and presence of mind.

India is a spiritual oriented country and is one of the richest nations in respect of cultural and spiritual perspective. Bharat is well known for festivals. The festivals of this land form the most important link that sustains its cultural heritage.  The number of festivals celebrated here is hardly comparable to festivals celebrated by other countries. Twelve months in a year is filled with thirteen big festivals. ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ has a special importance among them. The cycle of time keeps rotating but its memories remains.  To freshen these memories, memorials are made, stories are written, birth days are observed, in which self respects, love, true feelings are imbibed. Unfortunately, a day comes when respects & love ceases and rituals remain. It would not be exaggeration to say that festivals now-a-days are being celebrated just continue the tradition.

The auspicious festival of ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ had been reduced to an annual ritual hardly reflecting its true significance. Now what is the esoteric meaning of this ritual?

The deeper significance of this festival has been lost in the loud commercialisation and ritualistic traditions marking the day. Unknown to many, this festival is rooted in several myths and a spiritual truth of great significance that reflect its purity and power of protection.

The cycle of time keeps rotating but its memories remains.  To freshen these memories, memorials are made, stories are written, birthdays are observed, in which self-respects, love, true feelings are imbibed. New beginnings are welcomed with enthusiasm, hope, happiness and the pure desire for accomplishment. Around the world, and moreover in India, every milestone of life or fresh venture is encased with a ritual or simply an ardent prayer for everything to go well. These auspicious undertakings fill the aspirant with unending faith and vigour that ensure success. What a beautiful religious practice we follow of invoking the Supreme at every new step we take! How great then must that powerful deity be who is always worshipped during new beginnings: the revered Lord Ganpathi.

Now what is the esoteric meaning of this ritual?

Shri Ganesh is by far the most mystical deity, which makes him so intriguing and lovable. Vighna-Vinashak (the Destroyer of Obstacles), Siddhidata (Bestower of Attainments/ Success), the deity to be worshipped before all others in the Hindu pantheon, symbolises good fortune, has an elephant’s head and accommodating stomach, carries a rope and axe, rides a mouse Mooshak and is said to be outstandingly wise. These and several other exemplary features cement a place for Ganeshji in the hearts of lakhs of devotees, especially in Maharashtra.

But how ironic that ‘devotion’ is gradually evaporating from ‘religion’... Though we spend exorbitantly on Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations yearly, do we ever reflect on whether Ganeshji appreciates the pomp, the lavish pooja ensembles, the unending, raucous entertainment that usually bear no religious significance, the uncontrolled use of alcohol, the thumping on the idols during visarjan… We were meant to be honouring a divine being yet Ganeshji is subjected to an atmosphere of grave consequences! Without a doubt honest efforts are being invested to keep tradition 1alive by camouflaging the Festival with modern paraphernalia. It is commendable and inspiring to witness the unification of families and communities as a result of the celebrations but is the human soul being empowered and coming closer to the Almighty? Can we afford to forsake it?

Festivals are precious for lifting our spirits, binding stronger relationships with family and friends, and carrying forth ancient traditions to new generations and the world. But they serve an infinitely more valuable purpose: as we face the onslaught of natural calamities, corruption, terrorism, illnesses, pollution, and abominable fear and sorrow, the magic of these festivals hold no meaning unless the spiritual significance is realised and emulated. We worship Ganeshji to bring us luck devoid of hindrances and complications but wouldn’t it be more advantageous to follow His footsteps?

It is tragic to be beheaded by your own father but this sacrifice by Lord Shiva’s son granted him a new, unparalleled life of incredible wisdom and power. Ganeshji renounced his false identity to adopt a persona that out shadowed whatever he was previously. When we stand before God, humility unlocks the door of our mind to imbibe knowledge and develop an unbiased intellect.   There is no scarcity of learned philosophers and mahatmas who have cogitated and presented the symbolism behind Ganeshji’s physical features, weapons, consorts, fables etc. However, the eternal truth is that Ganeshji’s potency has and never will be a demonstration of physical capabilities.

Ganeshji is the treasure-store of spiritual powers: discrimination, far-sightedness, maturity, elimination of negative attitudes, letting go of trivial matters, balance of emotional and rational personalities, ability to mentally detach from the physical realm whenever needed and absorb God’s love and grace and much more. We too are endowed with said values to varying degrees but rarely do we acknowledge the same. Why is it more gratifying today to come into sound and action for festivities than engage in refining the soul’s virtues and experiencing God’s perfection and beauty? Even if the creation is flawed and ineffectual, there is no loss in maintaining faith in our Creator’s ocean-like supremacy. Ganeshji attained his glorious status after sincere endeavour, and wisely secured his powers for eternity so why not we, also children of God, at the least safe-guard our future by taking to his path of enlightenment?

Therefore, Ganesh has all the leadership capabilities in him. His ears shows that he is a good listener, his presence of mind shows his availability, and he has the strength to tolerate anything. The stomach shows the power to accommodate, he has in himself. His small eyes tell us the foresightedness and discriminating ability that he has. When he is seated, he has one leg on the ground and the other folded showing that the decisions he took were down to earth but at the same time uninfluenced and impartial. He had the strength to take up the responsibility and the laddus (sweatmeat) show the art of uniting all the particles of the laddu, i.e., through his sweetness he creates the team-spirit with sweetness. Other symbols signifies like Large Ears-Listen more, Big Head- Think big, Axe-To cut off all bonds of attachment, Small Eyes –Concentrate , Small Mouth -Talk less , Blessings-Blesses and protect on spiritual path to supreme , Large stomach-Peacefully digest all good and bad in life , Prasada-The whole world is at your feet and for your asking , Rope- To pull you to the highest god, One Tusk-Retain good throw away bad , Trunk-High Efficiency and Adaptability, Madaka-Rewards of Sadhana, Mouse-Desire. Unless under control can cause havoc. You ride the desire and keep it under control and don’t allow it to take you for a ride.

Hence, he is shown with two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi which means he always had success through the right method as his companion. Hence, he is also known by various names as Gannayak which means he is a leader with all inner powers and qualities, Asta-vinayak, which means a leader with the wisdom of using the eight inner powers. Vighna-Vinashak which means it is through the right application of his inner abilities at the right time that a leader is able to overcome all obstacles. Siddhi-vinayak signifies a leader who attains success through wisdom. Similarly, in the changing times the challenge can be met by a leader through spiritual wisdom or insight. As a result, he becomes successful and a source of inspiration for all.

Consider Ganeshji’s perspective for a few moments daily during the 10-day celebrations this year: “As I sit in the radiance of my Almighty Father, I am drawn inwards. I contemplate on my fortune of having taken birth at the hands of the Ultimate Creator. I marvel at this new existence. Every distinguished characteristic reminds me of my inner powers. As a child of the Ocean of Knowledge, I am gifted with a wise intellect. I sustain divine energy with a pure and clean mind, balanced intellect, detachment from the mundane, and by acting in sync with my Creator. Nothing is incomprehensible or impossible for me as my aura of purity dispels all limitations. My humility and selflessness never allow my powers to be tarnished. As my life is a blessing from the Supreme, I use this subtle energy to protect the welfare and goals of myself and all others.”

By living through all that Ganeshji upholds in this unique style, his glory will remain with us forever. Newness represents vitality and hidden potential, so just imagine what wonders will be revealed with a positive transformation of the human soul? In the enigmatic, holy presence of Lord Ganesh may each of us unveil a new ‘me’ and a new destiny.

So, let us all irrespective of different religious faith, celebrate this ‘ Ganesh Chaturthi’ and empower our self through process of Supreme Communion (Raja Yoga ) with Supreme Being ‘God’ - Incorporeal Point of a conscient Eternal Light to inculcate His Supreme Commands of Universal Values to establish a “Value Based Happy Society of Culture of Peace & Non Violence “ – our most cherished desire. The understanding of this eternal truth will usher in religious harmony & world peace. Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University has been engaged in this task for last 73years since its inception in 1936-37.

The true way of celebrating ‘ Ganesh Chaturthi’ would be to realize the significance of the present auspicious time ( Sangam Yuga, which is end of Kaliyuga – Iron Age and the beginning of Satyuga – Golden Age ) and by pledging to discard all negative traits such as anger, greed, ego and lust and by leading a life filled of love, compassion, respect, humility, cooperation, responsibility, divinity to establish a “Value Based Happy Society of Culture of Peace & Non Violence”.

On this auspicious occasion of ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’, 2012, take a moment for deep spiritual introspection and free yourselves from the bondage of greed, the lust for power and a slave of promiscuity and make God your eternal companion for true peace, happiness and prosperity.

Happy greetings on the auspicious festival of ‘ Ganesh Chaturthi’.  (The writer is a Faculty, Brahma Kumaris, Professor & Head, Dept. of Education, R.G.U)
